Whether you want it to blend in with your space or make a statement all its own, your tub surround can set the tone for the entire bathroom. Durable, easy-to-clean and waterproof bathroom tile protects your walls in style. Read on for 10 chic and unique tub surround ideas to suit your aesthetic.

1. Create a Sparkling Space With Glass Tile

The blue, grey and white tones in the Blue Twilight Brick tile create a waterfall effect on the inside wall of this stunning tub surround. Shiny and reflective, the glass tile shimmers as the light hits it, brightening the space and stimulating the senses. The glossy white tile on the outside walls provides another reflective surface, adding depth to the space. Shop glass tile to find styles as sparkling as your personality.

Tub surround in bathroom with tile glass brick mosaic feature wall, white ceramic tile side walls, niches on back wall with accent hex mosaic and a corner shelf for storage.
Featuring: Blue Twilight Brick, Nero Marquina Hex, Hampton Carrara Flat Corner Shelf and Hampton Carrara Somerset. *The glossy white wall tile is no longer available; achieve a similar look with Verona Bianco.

2. Match Your Modern Farmhouse Decor

Fashionably homey, modern farmhouse design celebrates elevated simplicity and a connection to rural roots. This bathroom, designed by I SPY DIY, embodies those ideals with a sleek surround featuring the Metro Bianco Gloss subway tile. The right-angled herringbone pattern adds dynamic movement to the space, enhanced by contrasting black grout. Blush-painted walls and a gossamer shower curtain infuse the space with a romantic sensibility, but the versatile tile design makes it easy to update by swapping out accessories. 3. Surround Yourself With Luxury

Ultra-luxe slab design is often created using a single block of stone, which can be both expensive and difficult to install. Achieve this high-end aesthetic on a more modest budget with our new selection of porcelain panel tub kits. Each kit includes two 30″ x 64″ panels and two 32″ x 64″ panels that mimic the size and appearance of large pieces of real marble at a more accessible price point. The Calacatta White tub kit, shown here, replicates luxurious white marble with bold, realistic veining—delivering refined Mediterranean style for under $1,000 per kit.

4. Don’t Forget the Details

A bathtub surround offers a wide canvas–make the most of it with beautiful and intentional details, like the marble corner shelves and tiled picture frame featured in this elegant bathroom designed by LoPiccolo Contracting. The focal point is created by “framing” the Hampton Niles marble mosaic tile with a single layer of Hampton Carrara Somerset. This exquisite design detail highlights a favorite patterned or mosaic tile that might be overwhelming if used throughout the entire space. The Hampton Carrara corner shelves provide stylish storage, eliminating the need for a bulky shower caddy.

5. Soak in Sophistication with Warm Neutral Tile

Here is another example of our new porcelain tile tub kits, available in four distinct marble looks: Calacatta White, Mastersone White, Statuario Nuovo and Max Rapolano (shown here). The creamy ivory tones infuse the space with warmth and contemporary style. The coordinating 12″ x 24″ Max Rapolano Ivory floor tile completes the look, creating a sense of quiet luxury and filling the space with rich serenity.

Exuding quiet luxury style, this lavish bathroom features a soft creamy white marble-look porcelain panel tub surround and large-format floor tile.
Featuring: Max Rapolano Ivory Matte Tub Kit and Max Rapolano Ivory Matte Wall and Floor.

6. Get it Straight (Stack)

Everything is stacked in this sleek bathroom’s favor. The Villa White Gloss tile is installed in a vertical straight stack, adding height to the walls and offering a chic, contemporary look. Slightly contrasting grey grout highlights the clean lines of this simple layout and provides a visual throughline to the Bronx Acero tile in the checkerboard-patterned floor. If subway tile is your style of choice, discover the myriad of installation options in our guide to subway tile layouts.

7. Tile the Tub Apron

Extending your tub surround to the tub apron creates a unified space that displays your style–even when the shower curtain is drawn. This lovely space, designed by Steph Cotherman Creative, features the Argile White Matte wall tile. The perfectly imperfect details of the handmade-look tile lend visual texture through purposeful variations in color and edge from piece to piece. The result is an understated grandeur that both soothes and invigorates the senses. Shop our wide selection of handmade-look tile to achieve this artisanal aesthetic.

8. Showcase Your Style With Patterned Tile

An expressive patterned tile infuses your space with personality in the form of durable and waterproof porcelain or ceramic. Here, the Nikki Chu Zulu Pumice tile (inspired by the celebrity designer’s popular wallpaper) brings bold, graphic design to this fashion-forward bathroom. Paired with the Nikki Chu Luxor Pumice subway tile on the far wall, the soft beige background and bold hand-drawn-look pattern add decoration while maintaining a neutral space. If you love this eclectic, global style, shop our exclusive Nikki Chu designer collection.

9. Create a Relaxing Atmosphere with Dark Tile

Cool and modern, dark grey or black tile exudes sleek sophistication–as evident in this sharply styled bathroom designed by Timber Trails. The Imperial Pewter Frame Gloss subway tile features a slightly reflective, glossy finish that catches the light and highlights its chic raised “frame” edge. The black tub surround contrasts beautifully with the white walls and white-with-black-polka-dot hex tile floor. This simple color scheme allows for styling versatility–a few well-placed colorful accessories would really stand out in this space.

10. Extend the Tile to the Ceiling

If your shower space is on the short side, you can create the illusion of height by extending your tub surround tile to the ceiling. This elegant shower, designed by Yellow Brick Home, takes the Firenze Carrara tile up the angled ceiling to draw the eye upward and create a continuous space within the tub and shower area. We love how the marble tile is also used as wainscoting in the main bathroom area.

If you’re starting a new reno project, you know there are countless decisions to make when designing your space. With literally thousands of tiles to choose from, it can be challenging to pick one, let alone the multiple tiles that might be required for a whole-room redo. Should your wall and floor coordinate or contrast? Should you feature all the same materials or mix things up? While your design will ultimately be determined by your personal taste, we have six tried-and-true tile combos that always deliver beautiful results.

1. Contrasting Colors

Dark and light or neutral and bright, contrasting colors add drama and dimension to a space. Drastic color contrasts allow each tile to stand out in relation to the other, resulting in a space that both stimulates and soothes the senses. Here are a few of our favorite spaces that use contrasting colors to stunning effect.

Black and White With Charm All Over

This modern colonial bathroom, designed by Chris Loves Julia, demonstrates just how elevated a simple black-and-white color scheme can be. The floor features a custom design using Hex Matte Black and Hampton Carrara Tumbled Hex tiles. The uniform shapes of similarly sized hexagon and penny round tiles allow for creative designs and borders, which are even more striking when using contrasting colors. The dark floor is juxtaposed with the subtly grey-veined white marble wall tile, and the addition of the slim black pencil trim provides a visual throughline that ties the design together.

Bold and Neutral

A bright, bold color will make your wall or floor pop, and that color becomes even more vibrant when contrasted with a neutral element. This kitchen features the Zellige Turquoise Gloss subway tile paired with the Arbour Lowlands Summer Oak luxury vinyl plank. The beige wood-look tones of the floor complement the brilliant jewel tones of the wall tile, and the mix of warm and cool colors gives the space a contemporary feel. For more durable, easy-to-install flooring options, shop our newly expanded wood and vinyl offerings.

Color Blocking

Add interest to your tile design by color-blocking two contrasting colors. This chic shower features one black wall and one white wall, creating the illusion of depth, which helps the small space appear larger. The black-and-white patterned Jeffery Alan Marks Summerland Toro floor tile keeps the space feeling cohesive.

2. Monochromatic Mix

Contrast naturally adds depth to your design, but if you prefer the clean look of a monochromatic space, you can create interest by incorporating different finishes, sizes, shapes and materials. Here are three tile designs that prove a limited color palette can still be lively.

White on White

Crisp and clean, white is an invigorating shade that works in virtually any space. This beautiful bathroom, designed by @lifewithmadisonm, showcases white tile in two distinct styles. The shower walls feature the Regent Bianco handmade-look subway tile, while the floor is adorned with Calacata Brilliante marble-look tile. The slight variations inherent to handmade and handmade-look tiles add subtle visual texture, while the striking grey veining on the marble-look tile lends depth to the space. If you love the look of an all-white room, shop our wide selection of white tile.

This contemporary bathroom features a handmade-look white subway wall tile and a white with grey veining marble-look floor tile.

Color Drenched

Embrace a bold hue to create a vivid tableau. A gorgeous green, beautiful blue or radiant red adds personality to your space. This lush shower pairs the Alison Victoria Gem marble mosaic tile with the Marradi Calacata Emerald marble-look tile. Though both tiles feature expressive veining, they are distinct in shape and tone, creating visual interest while maintaining color harmony.

Neutral Territory

A neutral color palette is the perfect recipe for tranquility. If you like an all-over creamy look, like this serene beige-on-beige shower, use texture and shape to keep your calming neutrals stimulating. The subtle mix of travertine and marble stone tiles adds just enough variation in tone and texture to create interest, while the framed Arctic White Large Herringbone tile wall detail and the Claros Silver square mosaic floor tile provide a sense of movement.

3. Coordinated Collections

One of the easiest ways to guarantee your design flows together is by using tile from the same collection or series on both walls and floors. A main benefit of a Tile Shop stone collection is its variety of shapes, sizes and trim offerings. All the tiles within a Tile Shop stone collection are sourced from a single quarry, so while natural variation ensures no two pieces are ever the same, your overall design will remain cohesive.

Marvelous Marble

Nothing symbolizes luxury quite like marble. This exquisite stone comes in a wide range of colors, from black and white to beige, grey and even red. Here, Calacata Evora marble tile is used to create a sumptuous bathroom featuring eight different field, mosaic and trim tiles–all crafted from the same stone. The use of varying sizes and shapes elevates the design by creating a sense of movement and refinement. The mix of grey and beige veining in the classic white marble makes it a popular choice for both contemporary and traditional styles.

Lush Limestone

Limestone is a naturally occurring stone formed from calcified coral and shells. Our limestone collections feature several stunning colors, including brown, tan, black, and the shimmering grey tones of the Silver Mist collection showcased here. With the use of subway and hex mosaic tiles in the shower, along with large-format tile for the main floor, this elegant bathroom, designed by Chris Loves Julia, demonstrates how to utilize different sizes and shapes within a single collection to create distinct yet cohesive spaces.

Timeless Travertine

Travertine, a type of limestone formed in mineral springs, is a rich stone distinguished by its naturally earthy tones. Shades of brown, grey, beige and silver (both alone and in combination) can be found in our travertine tile collections. Here, Legno travertine, with its soft beige tones and smooth veining, creates a relaxing atmosphere. Notice how the Wheaton mosaic, used as a focal point on the wall, maintains symmetry with the Double Chevron mosaic floor tile.

4. Patterns That Pop

One of our most popular wall and floor tile combinations is patterned and non-patterned tile. For the bold at heart, there’s nothing better than an accent wall or floor brimming with striking shapes. Delicate, floral, abstract or geometric–shop our wide assortment of patterned tile to find a style to suit your taste.

Botanical Beauty

A nature-inspired pattern will fill your space with serotonin-boosting outdoor vibes (bonus points if it includes colors found outside, like the Annie Selke Flora Vapor Blue tile shown here). This charming bathroom demonstrates how to feature a patterned tile without overwhelming the space. The colors in the floor tile are reflected in the blue sink vanity and the Annie Selke Artisanal White subway wall tile. By maintaining a simple color palette, the space feels elegant yet full of personality.

For more ideas on infusing your home with nature-loving vibes, check out our guide to biophilic design.

Pattern and Color

Pulling a color or two from your patterned tile will ensure your design coordinates. However, if you choose a black-and-white patterned tile, like the Cloth Black and White tile shown here, you can pair it with virtually any hue. We love how the Glass Royal Blue Amalfi tile pops against the black-and-white design, and how the black hardware and white grout lines create a visual throughline between the shower walls and the bathroom floor.

This contemporary bathroom features a black-and-white patterned floor tile and royal blue glass subway wall tile.
Featuring: Glass Royal Blue Amalfi and Cloth Black and White. Design and photography by Brightwood.

Wallpaper Effect

A patterned wall tile provides the look of wallpaper with all the durability and easy-to-clean properties of ceramic or porcelain–perfect for mess-prone spaces like kitchen backsplashes, bathrooms or entryways. This fashionable kitchen features the Nikki Chu Tangier Graphite tile. Bold enough on its own, this patterned tile is paired with the black Iconic Steel floor tile and the Nikki Chu Luxor Winter White subway tile (on the kitchen island). If you love this global, eclectic style, shop our exclusive Nikki Chu Collection.

5. Tone on Tone

One way to ensure a cohesive look between your floors and walls is to coordinate the tones of your tiles. This involves choosing a color from one tile and carrying it through to another. The result is floors and walls that complement each other without exactly matching. Here are a few spaces that exemplify this concept.

Beige on Beige

Tiles that offer shade variation are perfect for the tone-on-tone concept. This elegant bathroom, designed by @jessicasmithhomedesign, pairs the Coco Canvas Glossy wall tile with a marble checkerboard floor featuring Royal Satin White and Avorio Fiorito tiles. The undulating surface of the handmade-look subway tile spans creamy whites to light tan tones, which are reflected in the white and beige floor.

Rust on Rust

Here, the crisp white background and expressive rust-colored veins of the Pisa Oro Matte tile are echoed in the Kasbah Cross Terracotta and Star Bone floor tiles. While a single white, beige or grey tile would capture the tones of the unique marble-look wall tile, selecting the most vibrant shade creates an invigorating space. While nothing beats the singular luxury of real marble, some ceramic and porcelain marble-look tiles offer colors and designs you won’t find in nature, such as blue, green and gold.

Warm and Cool

Sometimes, multiple tones can be carried through from one tile to another. This welcoming entryway pairs the Organic Clay Taupe wall tile with the Jerica Ceniza floor tile. While one is dark and the other light, both of these handmade-look subway tiles feature a mix of warm brown and cool grey tones. The combination of the two creates a subtle visual texture that makes the space feel fresh and contemporary.

6. Eclectic

Even tile rules are meant to be broken! While tried-and-true combos make for beautiful and unique spaces, good design can be found in the least expected pairings. Here are a few of our favorite eclectic tile arrangements.

Singular Looks

The Alison Victoria Brick x Brick Petal tile and the Terrazzo Nero Macro tile are an unconventional couple that forms natural harmony in this sweetly chic bathroom, designed by Yellow Brick Home. The brick-like texture of the wall tile and the terrazzo-inspired floor tile, with its pattern of glass- and marble-look fragments, each contribute their own visual appeal. While the colors and textures are neither matching nor dramatically contrasting, their warm tones and singular styles make an interesting complement.

A Reflection on Texture and Pattern

This opulent space, showcasing tile from our exclusive Kelli Fontana Collection, is a wealth of texture and pattern. The Patina Siren Mirror wall tile provides a smooth, reflective surface with striking aged details, while the Tommas Carrara fluted marble-look wall tile lends texture to the space. Paired with the Inlay Proper Naples Beach floor tile, with its elegant leaf pattern, these tiles come together to create a rich, romantic tableau. Though each piece in her collection is distinct, celebrated designer Kelli Fontana conceived of all her tiles to work together for a classic, bold and whimsical aesthetic. Explore all of our exclusive designer collections for complementing tiles that form eclectic designs.

Shape and Movement

There are many ways to add a sense of movement to your tile design, as evidenced in this exceptional space. Though the three prominent tiles are aesthetically distinct, each brings its own visual flow. The center tile stripe features the Trois Bandes tile, with its black-and-white diamond pattern forming a horizontal zigzag. This movement is directionally mirrored by the organic woodgrain detail in the Amazon Amendoa tile, while the half-hexagon shape of the Tory Black mosaic floor tile reflects the diagonals in the patterned tile. The result is a space that could feel random but has enough visual throughlines to maintain cohesion.

Whether you seek a dramatic contrast, a soothing monochromatic space or a distinct ecelctic pairing, there are as many wall and floor combinations as there are tiles at The Tile Shop (literally thousands!). We hope these classic designs have inspired your next project, and if you need a little more guidance, be sure to schedule a free design consultation or visit your local showroom–our tile experts are excited to help you create a space you’ll love.

Embracing whimsical patterns, natural textures and soft color palettes, modern-day English country cottage style draws inspiration from traditional rural British architecture and design. Rooted in nostalgia, this charming aesthetic (and the closely associated cottagecore and granny chic) evokes the cozy simplicity of curling up on your grandmother’s sofa with a cup of tea and your favorite Jane Austen novel. Discover how to transform your space into a cheerful sanctuary with these nine fanciful yet fashionable tile ideas.

1. Celebrate the Classics

Founded in 1861 by William Morris, Morris & Co. continues the renowned British designer’s mission of bringing beauty to everyday life. The Morris & Co. St. James Farringdon Grey tile, shown here, features warm grey coloring and an ornate pattern derived from the wallpaper commissioned in 1881 for the grand staircase of London’s St. James Palace. Though originally designed for the aristocracy, this lovely tile–also available in Pure Cloud (light blue) and Wandle River (bright blue)–embodies the casual elegance and vintage appeal of a well-appointed English cottage. If your sensibilities lean toward the sophisticated, explore all the historic patterns available in our exclusive Morris & Co. collection.

2. Add a Touch of Whimsy

From King Arthur to Mary Poppins and Harry Potter, the British have a long tradition of creating classic characters and fanciful worlds. A spoonful of decorative whimsy brings the cheer and charm of imagined places into your very real spaces. This endearing kitchen backsplash features the Laura Ashley Wexbord Midnight tile (also available in Fresh Green). The petite floral motif is based on a 1981 pattern from England’s iconic Laura Ashley brand. Full of delicate geometric botanicals, classic colors and unique shapes, the Tile Shop-exclusive Laura Ashley collection brings the best of British design to American homes.

3. Embrace Elements of Cottagecore

The on-trend cottagecore style is akin to English country cottage in many ways, but while English cottage embraces an abundance of patterns, cottagecore takes a more serene and rustic approach to the rural aesthetic. Combining traditional tile styles with playful patterns helps to tone down some of the busyness associated with the English style (though feel free to be busy if that’s your cup of tea!). This bathroom, designed by I SPY DIY, pairs the Splendor Blanco wall tile with the Laura Ashley Mr Jones Charcoal floor tile. The white, handmade-look subway tile, arranged in a classic brick-lay layout, is common in cottages and farmhouse design, while the patterned floor tile adds a distinctly English country touch.

This cozy bathroom features white subway wall tile and a black and grey patterned floor tile.

4. Tile Your Floor in Natural Stone

Marble, slate and travertine offer natural beauty that elevates any design. Tumbled stone adds rustic appeal to your floors, while polished or honed stone creates a more sophisticated aesthetic. This pleasant bathroom, designed by @sposadesignllc, features the Hampton Delray marble mosaic tile. The basketweave pattern, reminiscent of traditional handicrafts, is complemented by a border of Hampton Carrara polished marble, making this floor feel both homey and high-end. The marble tile, paired with the blue-painted wood wainscotting and floral wallpaper, creates a space that exudes the cozy elegance of a posh cottage.

This charming bathroom features a grey marble mosaic tile floor with a border of grey marble tile.
Featuring: Hampton Carrara and Hampton Delray. Design and photography by @sposadesignllc.

5. Add Traditional Molding Details

Common in English cottages, molding is a decorative detail often found where the wall meets the floor, ceiling or door and window frames. Available in a range of durable and stylish natural stone and man-made materials, skirting, cornice, capital and Barnes tiles allow you to incorporate these traditional trims, even if they aren’t original to your home. The wall in this bathroom is divided by Hampton Carrara Barnes and Legno Luce Somerset trim tiles, creating a classic chair rail feature. Though traditionally used to protect walls from dining room chairs, it is employed here as a transition between the Annie Selke Tulip mosaic tile and the Hampton Carrara subway tile wainscoting.

6. Create Cozy Spaces with Warm Neutrals

Bright colors have a place in an English country cottage home, but that doesn’t mean you need to surround yourself with rainbow hues. Warm neutrals, especially when used in patterns, evoke a sense of comfort associated with this style. This mudroom, designed by West Bay Homes, features the Laura Ashley Wicker Dove Grey floor tile. The tile’s soft greige background and white geometric floral pattern complement the burnt orange accent wall and white cabinetry, creating a calm, inviting atmosphere.

This stylish entryway features a greige and white patterned floor tile.

7. Favor Florals

No English cottage is complete without a well-tended garden. Bring the botanicals indoors, and fill your home with year-round cheer with a floral-patterned tile. This vibrant backsplash, designed by Colleen Primm Design, features the Genius tile. The continuous design creates the look of wallpaper while offering the superior durability and easy maintenance of porcelain. If you find a floral motif as enchanting as Mr. Darcy, shop our wide assortment of patterned tile.

This cheerful kitchen backsplash features a wallpaper-look floral tile.
Featuring: Genius. Design and photography by Colleen Primm Design.

8. Add Texture With Victorian-Inspired Tiles

Popular in Victorian homes, tin tiles featured ornate patterns punched into the metal to create a raised surface design. You can achieve this antique look in a more durable ceramic format with the Victoria tiles, available in Blanc (shown here) and Gris Fonce (oxidized copper). With their raised pattern and weathered appearance, these tiles add texture and vintage appeal to your space. We love how this chic kitchen pairs the tile backsplash with white and light green cabinets, but these tiles would also look stunning with cottage-style open shelving or rustic wood cabinets.

This elegant kitchen features a white 3D tile with an ornate, Victorian-inspired raised pattern.
Featuring: Victoria Blanc.

9. Use Wood-Look Tile for a Cottage Feel

A wood floor is a quintessential cottage element. Achieve this aesthetic in every area of your home (even mess- and water-prone areas) with durable, water-resistant and easy-to-clean porcelain or ceramic wood-look tile. This charming dining room, designed by At Home with Ashley, demonstrates the versatility of this tile. The blonde wood tones of the Baltimore Beige tile are in harmony with the botanical wallpaper and fireplace yet would complement a range of styles. Find more durable, affordable and easy-to-install wood alternatives in our wide assortment of wood-look luxury vinyl flooring. Or, for naturally beautiful floors in less moisture-prone areas, explore our newly expanded selection of engineered hardwood.

Just like styling different sizes and shapes of pillows on a couch, layering tile trim and profiles in your space can help tie an entire design together for a custom, well-appointed look.

Customizing Your Space

We’re sharing our best practices for layering tile to show you how you can take your space to the next level. The look below incorporates a combination of trim pieces and mosaics to transform a simple picture frame into an exquisite focal point.

A guide to customizing with layered tile.

Since this bathroom uses the Firenze Carrara marble collection throughout, the untrained eye may see it as quite simple. Look carefully at the transitions, and see if you can identify how many trim pieces are actually used to accomplish this sophisticated design.

Incorporating different shapes and sizes from the same tile collection can carry this elevated look through to other areas of the room, such as the backsplash, half wall and shower (photo top left). By sourcing all of the pieces of a collection from the same stone quarry, each piece complements the others for stunning variation that isn’t overbearing. If you have a focal point, repeat the same design element in other areas, like a shower niche (photo top right).

Plan your visit. Find a local store.

Thoughtful Transitioning

It’s important to think about how each part of your space will work together to form a unified environment. Utilizing trim pieces between different materials, sizes, shapes and textures of tile can create the perfect transition.

Dimensional tile can create dramatic depth and texture, but it can also leave an uneven edge when paired with other selections (top left photo). Incorporating transitional trim pieces will offer a seamless solution from one style to the next. Similarly, they can be used on the floor to separate different areas within a space – the top right photo displays a subtle transition, while the photo below incorporates durable curb pieces for a more prominent separation from shower to floor.

Featured: Winter Morning Athens MosaicBianco Waves, Hampton Polished Stanton, York Cenezia, Hampton Carrara Cobble, Winter Morning Mosaic, Hampton Carrara Polished Shower Curb Top.

For tiles that vary in size, double up somersets and run them vertically for the greatest impact.

Using transitions is also the perfect way to emphasize an accent tile in your design. In the photo below, layered trim pieces instantly elevate the Brushed Bronze with Glass Metal Mosaic backsplash, while coordinating beautifully with the surrounding ceramic subway tile.

Featured: Imperial Gris Bevel Gloss Subway, Brushed Bronze with Glass Metal Mosaic, Imperial Gris Gloss Square Pencil Trim, Stainless Steel Metal Somerset.

Each trim piece has its own unique characteristics that make it perfect for specific uses.

Coordinating Finishes

Pictured below is an example of how trim and profile pieces can provide an opportunity to coordinate with fixtures. In cases where there’s no need for a transition or storage solution, metal profiles can be used in between tiles as a unique accent that can coordinate with other design elements, such as faucets or lighting.

Dural metal profiles are a glamorous way to layer with marble.
Featured: Ashford Carrara Marble Wall Tile, Barnes, Skirting and Dural 24K Gold Profile.

Layering trim and profile pieces can make every tile design better by adding dimension and interest. It shows that the design has been thoughtfully curated and has the finishing touches that elevate the space from basic to beautiful.

Perfectly imperfect handmade and handmade-look tiles are the embodiment of sophisticated charm. The natural variance in color and shape that characterizes handcrafted tiles will give your space a true one-of-a-kind look. Handmade-look tiles capture some of that uniqueness with slight variations that will provide distinction between tiles but with more predictable uniformity. Explore our collection of handmade Zellige tiles and handmade-look tiles, and read on to see how you can style both.

Zellige Tile

What is Zellige tile? Crafted in Morocco, each of these tiles is shaped and glazed by hand resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind look. These tiles come in a variety of colors and shapes, including the popular star and cross shapes, bringing old-world charm to contemporary design.

Available in alabaster, black, dark grey, light grey and white, each of these 4″ x 4″ square tiles is handcrafted creating naturally uneven lines and variances in surface color. The effect on these walls is absolutely stunning! These handmade Moroccan tiles are great for creating an unexpected moment like this recessed shelf or to liven up a kitchen backsplash (below). These tiles are also available in 2″ x 6″ rectangles and 2″ x 2″ square mosaic.

Zellige Charcoal Chabone Cross and Star

This classic Zellige pattern will transform your space with old-world sophistication. Install the cross and stars in contrasting finishes for a unique, but subtle pattern, as shown here with gloss crosses and matte stars.

Handmade-Look

Do you like the look of handmade tiles, but want a little more continuity? Get the unique character of handmade tiles with less variance in color and size (and a lower price-point) with handmade-look tiles.

Riad

These 4″ x 4″ square tiles–available in white, sand and grey–mimic the square Zellige tiles, with uneven edges and variation in color and surface texture, but the differences are not quite as pronounced as in the true handmade tiles. If you like your lines a little more straight and your color a little more uniform, you can’t go wrong with the Riad tile. We love how Rachael Jackson used the Riad White and Grey to create a stunning checkerboard pattern in her kitchen remodel.

Splendours

The Splendours takes subway tile up a notch with perfectly imperfect character. This tile comes in a variety of colors (as well as the traditional white) to suit your style. For an added twist on a classic subway, try the elongated-hex-shaped picket tile.

Marrakesh

The Marrakesh tiles will add a wonderful sense of movement to your walls. Available in white, blue and green, the natural color variation in the tiles makes for beautiful kitchen backsplashes (as evidenced below) but we also love how ISPYDIY created a checkerboard pattern for their shower wall.

Look

Available in dark blues, green and white, the Look elongated handmade-look subway tile comes in bold colors with an artisanal appearance that will add texture and charm to your space. We love how the variations in color add character to this kitchen island.

Track Stack

The slight shade variation in the Track Stack mosaic tiles creates an artisanal look even as the long thin tiles align with beautiful symmetry. If you’re loving this look, check out the Track Stack Navy Blue tiles.

Annie Selke Artisanal

The Annie Selke Artisanal Blue tile shown used in this shower features slightly uneven surfaces for a handcrafted look and unique charm. The slight imperfections add character, but this tile is still even enough to create almost straight lines.

Argile

Embrace quiet luxury with the Argile matte subway tile. The slight variations in tone and texture create a handcrafted look that pairs well with the soft, marble-look Livingstone Melange tile.

The third and final One Room Challenge™ reveal post is here! It has been so much fun to watch these spaces transform and to have the opportunity to work with such amazing designers. Is anyone else getting a serious itch to renovate their entire house or is that just us? Without further ado… let’s get into the remaining five spaces from the Spring One Room Challenge™!

Renovation Husbands

Starting us off with a bang is Stephen and David of Renovation Husbands! They took on an ambitious project tackling their master bedroom, closet and bathroom spaces. Even more impressive is that they did everything themselves!

Their bathroom before

What was once a storage space became the master bathroom of their dreams! Their design style flows seamlessly throughout the spaces, making each feel unique yet cohesive all at the same time.

Our shower was to be large, built-in, elegant, and most importantly, intentional. Intentional is [sic] word that we use all of the time when approaching a design – every aspect should look like it was done on purpose.

– Stephen & David

Design by: Renovation Husbands.

And intentional it is! Every detail was perfectly executed. Inspired by Sarah of Room for Tuesday, they continued each aspect of the room throughout the shower. Any chair rail, baseboard or crown piece was continued into the shower to create a space space that felt cohesive all the way down to the tile and wood trim pieces.

Stephen and David visited our showroom in Watertown, MA. They were assisted by Leoni, the store’s Assistant Manager: “We had ambitious plans and needed help from someone who was up for the challenge. Thankfully we were paired with Leoni. Leoni knows tile, and she knows what The Tile Shop has to offer. She took all of our questions seriously and provided us with amazing information on the process.”

Featured: Hampton Tumbled Hex Mosaic, Firenze Carrara Marble Barnes, Firenze Carrara Marble 8 x 20 in., Firenze Carrara Marble 12 x 24 in., Hampton Carrara Marble Skirting. Design by: Renovation Husbands.

From the moment they took on this project, Stephen and David knew that marble was the tile they wanted in their shower. They searched for the perfect marble that didn’t have too much yellow, consistent grays and was honed. They ultimately decided on our Firenze Carrara marble which offers beautiful variation making it a highly sought after stone.

Featured: Firenze Carrara Marble Barnes, Firenze Carrara Marble 8 x 20 in., Firenze Carrara Marble 12 x 24 in. Design by: Renovation Husbands.

They used our Wedi Shower System to easily create their custom shower. Made out of high density foam, the system allows you to easily waterproof your shower and prepare it for tiling!

Its foam is super lightweight and can be cut so much easier than cement board. The entire thing is absolutely brilliant. We will definitely be using the Wedi System again. – Stephen & David

Without a doubt, they achieved the intentional space they set out to create while also creating something pretty beautiful, too! Check out their entire master suite here.

Coco & Jack

Next up is Steve and Alyssa Terpstra, the husband and wife team that is Coco & Jack. Ever since they moved into this house over three years ago, their master bedroom and ensuite has been on their to-do list, but there always seemed to be a room that took higher priority. This ORC seemed like the perfect time to finally cross it off their list.

Steve & Alyssa’s bedroom before

Before, their bedroom and ensuite were functional but lacked their personality.

I’ve been thinking about how to redo our space for quite a while, and I really wanted it to feel collected and layered, with an over all neutral colour palette that still has a lot of depth to it. – Steve & Alyssa

Design by: Coco & Jack.

Even though their ensuite is a small space, they were able to add a lot of different elements and textures throughout the space. They chose to use a mix of finishes that were both rustic and polished to create interest.

Featured: Claros Silver Travertine. Design by: Coco & Jack.

They chose finishes for the shower that would make the space feel open and bright since it is relatively small. For their floor tile, they chose our Claros Silver Travertine for its unfinished and rustic qualities. It contrasts the polished finishes that Steve and Alyssa chose for the rest of the space adding a more casual feel.

Featured: Splendours White Subway and Hampton Carrara Marble Shower Curb. Design by: Coco & Jack.

They chose to lay the Splendours White Subway tile in a vertical straight stack to make the shower feel taller. Our Splendours tile has gorgeous variation in color and an almost handmade look to it, which adds depth and texture.

Featured: Claros Silver Travertine, Splendours White Subway, and Hampton Carrara Marble Shower Curb. Design by: Coco & Jack.

It’s all in the details! They added a Hampton Carrara Marble Curb and shelf. It continues the neutral tones grounded throughout the space and gives the shower added functionality and a finished look. Arguably the star of the show, Steve built the aged brass frame for the shower door, which has us all wondering if Steve would build us one!

Featured: Splendours White Subway, Hampton Herringbone Marble Mosaic, Hampton Carrara Marble Shower Curb and Claros Silver Travertine. Design by: Coco & Jack.

The Hampton Herringbone Marble mosaic tile adds a subtle pattern and continues the neutral tones from the rest of the space. If they thought their space was functional, it now is not only functional but even more so it is beautiful! Read about their entire One Room Challenge here.

Home Made by Carmona

From start to finish, Ursula Carmona executed each and every part of her bathroom and closet transformation making it a true DIY project. While challenging at times, the spaces that Ursula created are timeless and finally fulfill the plans she has had for the space since she moved in!

Ursula’s bathroom before

While the overall bones of the space stayed the same, you would never believe that these were once the same room!

I wanted to elevate the design in this room to be classy and sophisticated. Just because it’s not the biggest master bathroom doesn’t mean it can’t be loaded with modern luxury. – Ursula

Featured: Firenze Calacatta Honed Marble. Design by: Home Made by Carmona.

To add a luxe look to this bathroom, I went with a honed Marble floor tile from The Tile Shop, in a herringbone pattern in the center, and a border around the edges. – Ursula

Featured: Firenze Calacatta Honed Marble. Design by: Home Made by Carmona.

After some debate, Ursula decided to lay the floor tile in a herringbone pattern rather than playing it safe with a traditional staggered pattern. We are so happy she decided to go for it! The herringbone pattern complements the luxurious design that Ursula set out to achieve.

Featured: Firenze Calacatta Honed Marble. Design by: Home Made by Carmona.

Elements from her closet continue across the hallway and into the bathroom. We are so in love with the wallpaper Ursula used in her closet. It adds the perfect amount of statement while still feeling classic.

There is no question that Ursula created a glam, luxurious bathroom and closet that is centered with classic features. Get all the details on the full spaces on her blog.

Beginning in the Middle

What originally seemed like a relatively straightforward project for Catherine and Bryan of Beginning in the Middle, quickly turned into much more, but are we so obsessed with the end result! For this season of the One Room Challenge, they chose to transform the attic master suite of their parents’ new, old cape cottage. When we say we’re ready to move in, we mean it!

The attic space before

I want this space to feel cozy, quaint, and classic with modern accents.  I’m leaning into the modern English cottage aesthetic here.  Think creamy neutrals, florals, modern lighting, and some planked walls/ceilings. – Catherine & Bryan

Design by: Beginning in the Middle.

Initially, their plan was to add a bathroom without adding a dormer, but a few weeks in they began to reconsider. Adding the dormer would increase the bathroom space about 50 square feet of space. After a lot of consideration on whether it was worth it paired with the cost and timeline aspects of the challenge, Catherine and Bryan went for it! Now looking back, it made a huge difference.

Featured: Firenze Carrara Honed Marble. Design by: Beginning in the Middle.

They chose to use our Firenze Carrara Honed Marble which brings a classic and traditional feel to the bathroom. The grey veining contrasts beautifully off the white walls balancing the entire design.

Featured: Firenze Carrara Honed Marble. Design by: Beginning in the Middle.

The floor will primarily be the Firenze Hex tile, and we’ll use the Black Marquina Hex pieces to create the pattern. […] Having just a bit of black mixed with veiny white marble is going to add a really nice splash of contrast to the bathroom. – Catherine & Bryan

With some last minute changes due to COVID-19 and construction delays, there are a few finishing details left to complete the space. Read all about Catherine and Bryan’s 8-week transformation on Beginning in the Middle.

House of Hipsters

Her first time being a Featured Designer, Kyla, the brain behind House of Hipsters chose to take on her home office and gym. Her office seemed to be a place where furniture gets its chance but never seems to get a permanent spot. Let’s see what Kyla was working with!

Kyla’s office space during photoshoots before

It just wasn’t right…again. Being that I spend most of my time in this space, I want it to feel more welcoming and cozy…not cluttered and chaotic. […] More often than not it’s a dumping ground for sourced merchandise waiting to be cleaned, processed, and styled in the shop. – Kyla

Featured: Tresana Blanco Porcelain. Design by: House of Hipsters.

A gorgeous space with plenty of natural light, Kyla’s office had great potential. Some fresh floors, new furniture and unique art makes this space truly one of a kind.

Featured: Tresana Blanco Porcelain. Design by: House of Hipsters.

It was a last minute idea to add this arch connecting these two spaces and it turns out to be one of Kyla’s favorite details from the space. The Tresana Blanco large-format faux marble tile flows seamlessly in both rooms. It gives the space a glamorous feel without the added care of real marble.

Featured: Tresana Blanco Porcelain. Design by: House of Hipsters.

After some thought, Kyla chose to install the Pixel 2 Black Ceramic tile without grout to achieve a cleaner look. We love the contrast between the Pixel 2 Black and the Tresana Blanco floor tile. If only every at-home gym looked this glam!

Here’s a closer look at the black tile. You can see it has a subtle metallic dot pattern that gives the wall some added texture and edginess. – Kyla

Our favorite part of the One Room Challenge™ is here – the reveal! As you know, we worked with fourteen of the twenty featured designers this season and trust us, the reveals are even better than we imagined. Our designers worked hard for eight weeks to completely transform their space and it paid off. Alright, let’s get to the good stuff! Here’s part one of our three part series taking a look at the ORC reveals.

Beth Diana Smith

Kicking the reveals off is Beth Diana Smith’s transformation of her kitchen and powder bath. First, lets take a look at her kitchen transformations over the years.

Her kitchen prior to any renovations
In 2014, she made major updates to the floors, cabinets and appliances

After significant water damage to her kitchen last year, Beth decided to tackle this redesign a little sooner than she had originally planned. She wanted to tackle the countertops, backsplash and hardware with her ORC space.

Featured: Color Market Patagonia. Design by: Beth Diana Smith. Photo by: Mike Van Tassell.

“Overall, I want the kitchen to feel a bit funky and reflect my aesthetic but I want the foundation (the more permanent items like the tile) to be neutral.” – Beth

While her renovation in 2014 also featured white subway tile, our Color Market Ceramic Subway Tile in Patagonia, puts a modern spin on an old classic. From the matte finish to laying it in a vertical straight stack pattern, the backsplash adds to the overall contemporary feel of the kitchen.

Featured: Color Market Patagonia. Design by: Beth Diana Smith. Photo by: Mike Van Tassell.

For her powder bath, she wanted it to be an experience, and we must say, she nailed it! With the tile touching all four walls with one wall tiled all the way to the ceiling, she achieved that bold and dramatic look she was aiming for.

Featured: Cell Light Gold. Design by: Beth Diana Smith. Photo by: Mike Van Tassell.

“For my Powder Room I wanted the tile to scream my aesthetic, very bold and very funky. So I’m using The Tile Shop‘s Cell Ceramic Tile that I knew was the perfect fit as soon as I saw it.” – Beth

Featured: Cell Light Gold. Design by: Beth Diana Smith. Photo by: Mike Van Tassell.

It was love at first sight for Beth and our Cell Light Gold Ceramic Tile, making it the perfect decorative tile to make a big statement in a small space. Paired with a deep wine shade on the walls and matte black fixtures, this bathroom perfectly fits Beth’s eclectic and fun style. View her entire One Room Challenge space here.

Liz Kamarul

Liz’s One Room Challenge had another challenge in of itself: to transform the kitchen repurposing what she already has. The before and after looks like a completely different space, which is proof that small changes make a big impact!

A view of the kitchen when Liz bought the home a year ago

To many, her kitchen would be perfectly fine, but to Liz, it lacked the personality she loves to bring into her spaces. She has since made some updates, but it wasn’t quite perfect. This ORC was the perfect time to make it a whole lot more ‘Liz!’

Her kitchen prior to ORC

Complete with a tiled kitchen island and a mural on the ceiling, her finished space screams Liz’s colorful personality and daring style, all the while trying to think of creative ways to use what she already had on hand. Her ORC wasn’t without a few trials and tribulations, though…

“Hot tip from a newbie who had to learn the hard way: mix up your grout in small amounts and work in small areas. Make sure the grout is smooth like cake mix and wipe it off as you go. It dries very quick!” – Liz

Our Color Market Ceramic Subway Tile was a popular choice this season and is featured in a few ORC spaces. Liz used the Color Market Tile in Army for her backsplash. The matte finish and natural texture gives an earthy feel to the space.

Featured: Color Market Army. Design by: Liz Kamarul.

Check out her entire reveal on her blog!

Clark + Aldine

Danielle and Michael of Clark + Aldine set out to create a functional and purposeful kitchen, dining and living space for their family. The space has been completely transformed into a gorgeous open concept great room where their design personality flows seamlessly throughout. Let’s take a look at the space before…

The living space before
The kitchen before

This was not an easy task. To achieve the open concept look, Danielle and Michael had to do some serious demo to the space.

When selecting their backsplash tile, Danielle and Michael landed on our Splendours White Ceramic Tile, specifically being drawn to the way it reflects light. To add another twist, they added pieces of our DURAL Chrome Plated Trim randomly throughout the pattern.

One of our favorite parts of their space is their kitchen nook. Both beautiful and functional, it features our Firehouse Thin-Brick Tile. Actually sliced from a brick block, you can achieve the traditional red brick look, or you can opt to paint the brick like Danielle and Michael did.

Featured: Firehouse Thin-Brick Tile. Design by: Clark + Aldine. Photo by Josh Stoddart.

Check out their entire transformation over on Clark & Aldine.

Kate Pearce Vintage

Kate Pearce took her vintage-inspired style to transform her attic into a gorgeous guest ensuite, and in true Kate Pearce fashion, it is full of fun vintage finds. Transforming a mostly unfinished attic is not an easy undertaking!

The space before

“Still, there was something this space had in SPADES, and that thing was ‘potential.’ The first step towards reaching that potential would be to demolish; to demolish just about everything.” – Kate

This corner of the attic was finished, but will become the new “guest space”

The after photos may shock you! The space is completely transformed into a functional extension of Kate’s home perfect for guests.

Our Artisan Tiare Porcelain floor tiles give a gorgeous low-maintenance design element to the entire space. Kate’s love affair with the color orange made it the perfect tile to add a wow-factor, while still keeping the space sophisticated.

“I love that the Artisan Tiare combined the ochre color with charcoal and white, allowing the tile to pick up the white and blacks that I planned to ground the room with.” – Kate

Featured on the entire bathroom floor including in the shower, the Artisan Tiare Porcelain creates a sense of cohesion that draws the natural eye through the entire space.

To finish the space, Kate chose our Color Market Ceramic Subway tile in Santorini and Cosmos (which has since been discontinued). Both shades pull from the Artisan Tiare Porcelain to once again marry the entire space together.

A sculpture is simply defined as a work of art that is three dimensional. Sculptural tiles follow this same idea. They’re 3-D, adding dimension and life to the walls of your home, and they are interesting and beautiful works of art all on their own. You’ll often find that sculptural tiles are neutral in color. Their unique shapes speak for themselves, and they’re perfect for keeping the look and feel of your space simple yet exciting. Explore how this up-and-coming tile trend can amplify your home’s walls.

Lots of 3D tiles incorporate geometric designs. By mixing and matching the different faces of the Tangram series, you can create an entirely unique patchwork look.

We’ll keep this brief as we know you are only here for two things: Sophia Bush and her beautiful California dream home. And let us just say, this house is everything you could want—and then some! If you haven’t already heard, Sophia Bush recently completed the renovation of her mid-century bungalow in Los Angeles, California. She spearheaded this incredible undertaking with the help of her talented friends, Orie Prince (contractor) and Jake Alexander Arnold (interior designer).

Photography by Trevor Tondro. All photography courtesy of Elle Decor.

Kitchen & Living Room

The goal for the kitchen was to design a “really beautiful space for community,” Orie Prince said. From entertaining friends and family to day-to-day use, the 13-foot-long island seamlessly achieves the design team’s intention. Detail after detail, this kitchen has it all.

The interior decor’s large variety of texture and color immaculately replicates the warmth of the outdoors.

Master Bedroom & Bath

From acting to activism, Sophia is what we would call a busy bee. Someone as involved and dedicated as her would most likely want the perfect place for relaxation and rejuvenation. What better place than a master bedroom and bathroom?

Sophia referred to her new master bathroom as “the dream of dreams.” With a space this impressive, she is absolutely right!

We especially can’t get enough of the open, curved shower. Imperial Blush Mosaic beautifully plays off of the bathroom’s warm color palette. The glossy finish adds the perfect shine to help brighten the space.

Home Office

Fun fact: Orie and his team soundproofed the home office so that Sophia could have a space to record her latest podcasts.

Guest Room & Bath

The warm tones from the master bathroom were repeated in the guest bathroom to create the perfect sense of unity. This shower wall is embellished with a dark-hued Imperial Sienna Gloss Mosaic.

Powder Room

If you couldn’t tell by now, Sophia loves color just as much we do. We are mesmerized by this blue powder room. Love the color blue? Check out our blog post that is dedicated to this confident color!
