Only have a small space dedicated to doing the wash? The right laundry room tile makes even the tiniest space feel luxurious. Read on for 20 of our favorite tile ideas to add cheer to your chores.

1. Choose a Durable Hardwood Alternative

If you like the look of hardwood but are hesitant to install it in a space where spills and heavy machinery are a given, water- and scratch-resistant wood-look tile is the answer. The Woodsman Deep Forest tile, shown here, embodies the rustic characteristics of natural wood while providing the durability of porcelain.

The handmade-look Riad White tile creates visual interest in the shower with the slight color variance between the tiles. The effect is a rich and vibrant black and white room. The pops of pink and orange in the decorative fans and the natural greenery add just enough color to keep the space fun and lively.

3. Jessica Brigham’s Retro Glam Bathroom

When designer Jessica Brigham decided to restore her 1930s bungalow bathroom to its former glory, she knew The Tile Shop could provide the perfect classic tile pieces for her remodel. The white subway tile, bullnose and black pencil trim follow the original design of this classic home. The simple white and black tile allows the bold statement wallpaper to really shine. The Harlow with Vintage Patina Stone mosaic in the shower niche isn’t original to the house, but the design is reminiscent of Art Deco design, perfect for this glamorous retro space.

4. Angelia Gutherie’s Chic Condo Kitchen

The heavy, wood cabinets made this condo kitchen feel dark and constrictive, while the blue tile accent piece created visual clutter. With a modern marble slab design, Angelia Gutherie transformed this open-concept condo kitchen into a bright and airy space. The subtle grey and taupe veining in the Calacata Evora Honed marble creates a wonderful sense of movement and light visual texture that provides the perfect background to the open shelving display. The large-format tiles require fewer grout lines, creating a sleek cohesive and expansive look.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size backsplash tile is best for a small kitchen?

Virtually any size tile will work well for a small kitchen backsplash. If you want a cohesive look that will make your space appear more expansive, use a larger tile. A small tile, like an intricate mosaic will add movement and interest to a small backsplash.

What is the best color backsplash for a timeless kitchen?

A crisp white backsplash is easily adaptable as your style evolves. White subway tile is a classic look that can easily be updated with colored accents or by painting your cabinets and shelves.

Should the backsplash be lighter or darker than the countertop?

Your backsplash color depends on your personal style. If you tend towards the bold, a drastic contrast between your tile and cabinet color will add a sense of drama to your kitchen. A backsplash that picks up some of the tones of your cabinets–like a gold-flecked backsplash with gold fixtures on your cabinets –will look cohesive while still being interesting. The important thing is not to choose the same color for your backsplash as your cabinet, that will leave your space with little definition.
