Combining the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (finding beauty in simplicity and imperfection) with the Scandinavian concept of hygge (the feeling of comfort and coziness), “Japandi” is an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional minimalist design style. Though it has experienced a recent renaissance, this East-meets-West style dates back to the 1850s, when Japan opened its borders to the world and Danish explorers became enamored with the country’s artistry and design. Read on to discover eight ways to incorporate this earthy, organic and calming design style into every room of your home.

1. Maintain a Minimalist Palette

Minimalism is a key tenet of Japandi design, and the right tile can help you maintain a tranquil, uncluttered space. A soft neutral tile is a great base to your design, allowing you to layer in other colors and materials. This bathroom features the Lanse Matte White Picket tile, pairing the crisp white tile with metallic gold accents and a soft grey sink. Though this space has few adornments, the mix of vertical and diagonal lines in the picket tile adds interest and a sense of movement.

2. Incorporate Greenery

Japandi emphasizes a connection with the natural world, and incorporating plants and other natural elements into your design will help create a sense of serenity. Soft, earthy greens function as a neutral color, and nature-inspired decor–when used sparingly–is encouraged. The Morris & Co. Hawkdale Willow Olive tile features elegant leaf designs that are both decorative and minimalist. Pair this tile with the corresponding Hawkdale Pure Chalk tile to add neutral space between the designs.

3. Choose Warm Neutrals

The Scandinavian concept of hygge refers to the feeling of coziness and contentment, which is incorporated into Japandi through warm colors and materials. This cozy nook, designed by Christy Bloom Design & Build, features the Laura Ashley Wicker Dove Grey tile. The soft greige coloring complements the wooden cabinets for a soothing and inviting space. Shop brown and beige tiles to achieve this warm neutral aesthetic.

This tranquil entryway features a patterned greige tile floor and a wooden cupboard.

4. Embrace Imperfections

The Japanese concept of wabi-sabi celebrates the imperfect–the very quality that makes our authentic Zellige tile so compelling. Each tile is crafted, glazed and painted by hand, resulting in a unique look from piece to piece. With Japandi’s emphasis on handmade and authentic materials, Zellige tile perfectly encapsulates its ethos, however, if you’re interested in a tile that’s a little more uniform (and affordable), check out our wide selection of handmade-look tile.

This elegant shower features white square-shaped handmade tile and brass fixtures.

5. Use Wood-Look Tile for a Natural Appearance

While authentic materials are essential to Japandi design, they might not be practical for every space in your home. Hardwood is commonly associated with Japandi, but to get this aesthetic in high-traffic or damp areas, wood-look tile is a great alternative. This serene shower features the Nidus Decor Mix tile. The blonde wood look and textured surface (which would be difficult to replicate in real wood) create the soothing atmosphere expected in Japandi but in a material suited to the space.

6. Combine Rustic and Refined Elements

Achieve a look that seamlessly combines the rustic Scandinavian aesthetic with the grace and elegance of Japanese style, with natural stone. The veining inherent to marble, slate and travertine creates a one-of-a-kind character that embodies the spirit of Japandi design. This living room, designed by Esslinger Design Co., features the Legno Geometric tile on the fireplace surround. The architectural style stone mosaic provides texture, while the naturally occurring color variation gives this space authentic visual interest.

7. Use Texture

Since Japandi mostly adheres to a warm neutral color palette, texture is key to creating interest to your space. A fluted, or 3D tile, adds a tactile element to your walls that will stimulate the senses while providing a unique visual element. This tranquil entryway features the Khali Flash Off White tile, the subtle pattern of soft, flowing raised lines adds depth to the space, with a design that changes effect as light moves through the room.

8. Embrace Elegant Symmetry

Japandi favors clean lines and symmetry for a sense of harmony. Subway tile arranged in straight vertical or horizontal stacks, or neatly aligned mosaics like the Home Kit-Kat Milk tile used in this kitchen, designed by Yellow Brick Home, will achieve this aesthetic. The long, skinny tiles of this handmade-look mosaic form smooth horizontal and vertical lines, giving this space an orderly feel, while the slight variations in color and texture between the pieces provide an organic appeal.

]]>
If the past year was all about discovering your personal style and designing home interiors that bring you joy, the coming year will see further individualization with more nuanced expressions of the styles we’ve come to love. Some design staples of 2024–such as artisanal, sustainable and organic materials–will continue to be a focus through 2025 and beyond. Read on for 15 new trends you’ll want to make your own for years to come.

1. Hotel-Inspired Interiors

Luxurious, serene and universally appealing, hotel-style interiors make every day feel like a vacation. This five-star shower features the Pisa Oro wall tile matched with the Kasbah Star Bone and Terracotta Cross for a rich and pampering space. Choose luxe marble- or handmade-look tiles in a warm, neutral palette to achieve this look.

2. Celebration of Pattern

Whether graphic and bold, or soft and floral, we predict that patterns will be gracing more walls and floors. Durable and easy to clean, porcelain and ceramic tiles are perfect for showcasing a favorite print–especially in high-traffic or high-mess areas like a kitchen backsplash. Shop our extensive selection of patterned tile to find a design you’ll love.

3. Picket Tile

A new twist on traditional subway tile, picket tile has gained popularity in recent years, and we foresee it continuing to add pointed charm for years to come. Shop our full selection of picket tile to find a style that fits your space.

4. Curves

Sofas aren’t the only traditionally boxy items turning to rounded edges; curved tile has fewer sharp points, creating a softness to your interior design. Scallops, waves and penny rounds–with their soothing silhouettes–will be featured in more spaces. Here, the Gem by Alison Victoria tile shows how the curved edge enlivens a space with gentle movement.

5. A Focus On Artisan Designs

Both interior design and fashion saw a renewed enthusiasm for handcrafted goods in 2024, and we expect this trend toward authenticity and quality to continue into the new year. Crafted, painted and glazed by hand, each Zellige tile adds one-of-a-kind character to your home. This kitchen, designed by Fox Homes and featuring the Zellige White Gloss tile, shows how the slight variations from piece to piece come together to create an elegant space.

This bright and charming kitchen features white Zellige tile backsplash and open white shelves.

6. Eclecticism

Artfully mixed patterns, colors and materials are what make eclectic design so intriguing. This style rewards the bold and unconventional, as seen in the uniquely patterned Big Sur tile from celebrity designer Jeffrey Alan Marks. The abstract layers of glossy blue patina top a cream-colored matte base, giving the appearance of glazed pottery. Shop Big Sur in its two distinct colorways: Sea Spray (green) and Off the Hook (shown).

7. Japandi

A harmonious blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design, Japandi places significance on soothing colors, high-quality materials and a connection with nature. Choose warm neutral colors and wood-look tile (such as the Nidus Decore Mix tile shown here) to create your personal Zen retreat.

8. Brilliant Blue

From bright cobalt to rich navy to vivid sky, blue in all its hues will infuse our interiors with vibrant, serotonin-inducing vibes in 2025. Shop our wide assortment of blue tile–including the Zellige Azul gloss tile shown here–to find the perfect shade for your space.

9. Cozy Patterns

Charming florals are a cornerstone of some of our favorite emerging trends. “English cottage” and the closely related “granny chic” styles use vintage-inspired plays of pattern and color to evoke the cozy feeling of curling up on an overstuffed sofa with a warm cup of tea. The whimsical patterns in our exclusive Laura Ashley collection will help you achieve this timeless trend.

10. Glass and Mirrors

Reflective surfaces will brighten more spaces in 2025. Mirrored glass tiles add warmth and depth to your space, making them a great choice for kitchen backsplashes or entryway walls. Here, the Patina Siren Mirror by Kelli Fontana tile helps to illuminate this stylish kitchen.

Order $3 samples.

11. Textured Walls

The coming year will be about celebrating all five senses, which means adding tactile elements to your home. Fluted tile, like the Violin Decor tile shown here, adds texture to your walls. Install this tile in your bathroom or shower to awaken your senses at the start of the day.

12. Natural Neutrals

The trend toward embracing the shapes, materials and colors of nature will continue into the new year. Warm browns and beiges reflect the outside world and create a serene and soothing atmosphere. Shop our full assortment of brown and beige tiles to create tranquil spaces.

13. All Things Green

Increasingly recognized as a new neutral, green inspires a feeling of connectivity with nature, making it a popular shade for home interiors. Its versatility in pairing with other colors makes it a go-to tone for a variety of styles. Shop our wide selection of green tile and create your own envy-worthy space.

14. Self-Care Spaces

Making time to be your best self is more than just a trend. Prioritize your self-care by creating spaces that promote well-being. Whether it’s an ultra-luxe bathroom like this Nikki Chu-designed room, or a tranquil shower, having a place in your home that relaxes and revitalizes you will help you care for more than just yourself.

15. Natural Stone

Luxurious and unique, natural stone continues to be a popular design choice. In addition to the ever-popular marble, we predict that travertine will grace many spaces in 2025. Here, Arctic White marble is paired with Claros Silver travertine for a beautifully textured shower.

Two of our favorite hues–green and blue–are becoming increasingly popular in interior design due to their ability to boost serotonin and create connection to the natural world. From pale neutrals to brilliant jewel tones, here are 10 unique tile ideas to inspire you to incorporate blue and green into your kitchen backsplashes and walls.

1. Add Charm With “English Cottage” Patterns

The delicate florals and whimsical shapes of our exclusive Laura Ashley collection tiles embody the cozy charm of “English cottage” style. Here, the Wexbord tiles in Midnight and Fresh Green combine historic prints from the iconic British design company with natural hues. The results are spaces that are both bright and fun, yet as soothing as a warm cup of tea.

2. Add Softness With Curved Tile

Make waves in your kitchen with the Wave Blue Reef tile. The curved edges add softness to your design, and the tile can be installed in a variety of layouts for a personalized look. The offset pattern of this kitchen backsplash creates gentle “pillowy” lines that give this space a sense of movement.

You needn’t saturate your entire kitchen in blues and greens if that’s not your aesthetic. A touch of color adds visual texture to your space. This cozy “modern farmhouse” kitchen, designed by I SPY DIY, is case in point; the Look Avio tile used on the side of the kitchen island complements the neutral color scheme while standing out enough to create interest.

Handcrafted using centuries-old techniques (click here to learn all about the process), each authentic Zellige tile varies slightly in tone and surface texture, giving it its perfectly imperfect appeal. Read on for eight stunning Zellige and Zellige-inspired spaces that are sure to spark ideas for your next project, whether it’s a shower, kitchen, bath or fireplace.

1. Zellige Tile Shower Ideas

As evidenced by this gorgeous space designed by @forgegrove, Zellige tiles are perfect for creating understated elegance in your shower. The uneven surfaces of the Zellige White gloss tile add a tactile element to this space, and the sleek brass fixtures help elevate even more. The authentic materials and minimalistic look of this space give it an air of “quiet luxury.”

3. Zellige Tile Kitchen Backsplash Ideas

Perfect for a kitchen or bathroom backsplash, petite 2″ x 6″ subway tiles, shown here in the Zellige Dirty Blue gloss, are a new take on a classic design. The smaller format allows for more grout lines as well as more tiles per square foot, resulting in a beautifully undulating surface as the color and surface texture fluctuate from tile to tile. Shop this tile in all four vibrant colorways: Azul, Turquoise, Dirty Blue and Shamrock.

Featuring: Zellige Dirty Blue.

4. Use Square Tiles for a Neat and Orderly Design

This retro-favorite shape is making a comeback, and the handmade square tile–like the Zellige White gloss used in this chic kitchen designed by Fox Homes–demonstrates how this classic design can be made modern. Though the color scheme is monochromatic, there is a lot of visual texture in this kitchen backsplash. The glossy finish reflects light to highlight the subtle variations in surface texture from one tile to the next, and the wide grout joints accentuate the tiles’ handcrafted edges.

This bright and charming kitchen features white Zellige tile backsplash and open white shelves.

5. Use Handmade-Look Tiles for a Cost-Effective Alternative

If Zellige tiles aren’t in your budget, or if you want a slightly more uniform appearance, handmade-look tile, like the Riad White tile shown here, are a charming and cost-effective alternative. Mimicking the handcrafted look, these tiles feature slight variations in tone and surface texture and are available in a wide variety of sizes and colors. Shop our extensive assortment of handmade-look tiles to find the perfect match for your space.

6. Create a Handcrafted Hearth

A fireplace is a natural focal point; make it a standout with handcrafted Zellige tiles. This fireplace surround, designed by @daryakaras, features a charming checkerboard of Zellige in Alabaster and White gloss. The undulating tones add warmth and movement to this Craftsman living room.

7. Zellige Tile Bathroom Ideas

Another popular Zellige tile design is the Chabone Star and Cross tiles (shown here in Charcoal). By pairing Star matte tiles with Cross glossy tiles (or vice versa) you can create a subtle tile design that fluctuates with the play of light across the room. Traditionally used for floors, these tiles look stunning when paired with a subway or square Zellige wall tile (like the Zellige Alabaster gloss tile shown here).

8. Get Creative With a Star and Cross Checkerboard

The checkerboard rules aren’t written in black and white. This luxurious shower uses the Kasbah tile in alternating Terracotta Cross and Star Bone for a twist on traditional Moroccan design. The orange and white handmade-look tiles are complemented by the rust veining in the Pisa Oro wall tile, giving this space a cohesive and visually rich design. A similar look can be achieved using the Zellige Chabone Cross Charcoal and Star Bone tiles.

Endlessly versatile, subway tile is a design staple that transcends trends. Available in a wide variety of lengths, materials and colors, the right subway tile can be incorporated into virtually any style. If you’re looking to redo your kitchen or bathroom backsplash, these 13 unique design ideas are sure to inspire a look you’ll love.

1. Elevate the Everyday with Marble

Luxurious and unique, marble takes even a simple design to the next level. This beautiful backsplash designed by Timber Trails features the Firenze Calacatta Amalfi tile to accentuate this space. The use of the white with grey and taupe veined marble with the white cabinets elevates what could be a very basic kitchen design. Check out our 20 Creative Kitchen Backsplash Ideas to Pair With White Cabinets for more kitchen inspo.

2. Mix Finishes

If you’re using subway tile for a whole wall, you can create a distinct backsplash moment by mixing glossy and matte finishes. This serene bathroom features the Coco Canvas matte tile with a stripe of the Coco Canvas glossy tile that extends from behind the sink and into the shower. The use of multiple layout designs (vertical and horizontal stacks) creates extra interest, but if this change in direction is making your brain hurt, you can achieve a similar effect with just the use of glossy and matte. The light reflecting off the glossy tiles will create a natural distinction.

3. Make a Point With Picket Tile

Like the neat stacks of subway tile but looking for a modern twist? This elongated hex tile gets its name from the fence posts it resembles. We love how this tile creates naturally fitting off-center stacks. The long Lanse Matte White Picket tile shown here creates length to this bright modern bathroom backsplash, but picket tile comes in a variety of sizes and colors. Shop our full selection of picket tile to find you style.

6. Embrace the Perfectly Imperfect

The slight variations in size, surface texture and color create a backsplash with completely unique character. Shop our full assortment of Zellige tile, or if you like this look, but want a little more reliability in size and texture, shop handmade-look subway tiles.

7. Herringbone Pattern

Part of subway tile’s appeal is the ability to change the style completely depending on which layout you choose. The herringbone pattern is a classic layout that will give your space a sense of movement as it zigs and zags across your backsplash. Choose a long, skinny subway tile, like the Tribeca Gypsum White tile shown here, to add the illusion of length to your space. For more design ideas, check out this guide to 6 Classic Subway Tile Layouts.

8. Keep It Straight (Stack)

Another favorite layout, the straight stack is neat, orderly and very modern. This chic bathroom features the Coco White glossy handmade-look tile. The subtle variations in size, surface texture and coloring add interest, while the vertical stacks create orderly, gridded lines lend a sense of harmony to this space. We love how this design uses a slightly darker grout with the white tiles to accentuate the tidy lines of this design.

9. Subway Tile Kitchen Backsplash Ideas

If your kitchen backsplash extends behind your stove, you can use your layout design to create distinction between your spaces. This modern kitchen backsplash pairs a classic brick lay tile design with a herringbone design to highlight the cooking space. We love how the herringbone creates movement between the stovetop and range hood, but this layout could also work by mixing a vertical offset with a vertical straight stack or horizontal and vertical stack.

10. White Subway Tile Backsplash Ideas

Classic and classy, white subway tile can make for surprising designs. A contrasting black or grey grout will add drama to your design, and you can add dishes or flowers to enliven your space. This subway tile backsplash designed by At Home With Ashley shows how you can use white subway tile as a reprieve from a more colorful space. You can even switch out your accessories with the seasons or your mood!

11. Create Contrast

A dark subway tile with a white grout–or vice-versa–will add instant drama to your space. This sleek and chic modern kitchen uses the Noir Honed Amalfi subway tile with a crisp white grout. The white cabinets and counters keep this space from becoming too dark, but we love how this simple black and white color scheme adds character to this room. Shop our wide selection of pro-rated grout to achieve this look.

12. Add Dimension with Beveled Tile

Beveled tile’s raised surface will give your space elegant dimension. Even a white beveled subway tile, like the Imperial Bianco Bevel tile used in this elegant kitchen designed by The Wray Design Co., adds a slight quirky element to your design. Shop the Imperial Bevel tiles in all their color ways to get this effect on your backsplash.

13. Alternate Your Stacks

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your layout. The alternating horizontal and vertical subway stacks used for this chic kitchen backsplash create a unique and unexpected design. The calming grey tones and reflective surface of the Coco Amber Grey Glossy tile adds brightness and interest to this kitchen. While this design accentuates the high wall, this backsplash idea would also add the illusion of height to a more confined space.
